High Performance Sport Management - Summer 2015 Internship - USA Taekwondo (Colorado Springs, CO)

Overview

USA Taekwondo (USAT) is a 501(c)3 non-profit and the national governing body (NGB) of Taekwondo for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC); as such, it is the official Member National Association of the World Taekwondo Federation in the USA. USAT has complete authority over all decisions regarding U.S. national junior and senior team selections for World Taekwondo Federation events, including the Summer Olympic Games Taekwondo competition. A primary function of the NGB is to host/conduct national and international events in its sport. USAT hosts a variety of events each year such as the U.S. Open Taekwondo Championships, USAT National Qualifiers, USAT National Championships and Junior and Senior Team Trials.

The primary focus of this internship will be to assist staff with all areas of preparation and execution for national and development team training camps taking place at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center. The intern will assist with logistics, data collection, and program management regarding the top athletes in the United States. The successful candidate will also provide direct support to the High Performance Director on implementing the high performance plan.

An intern with USA Taekwondo must be a responsible self-starter capable of handling multiple tasks at the same time yet taking each to completion.  The intern must have basic computer skills, strong interpersonal skills and be able to work well in a team environment.

This internship will feature numerous hands-on projects including background/planning information for each camp as well as after-action analysis.  The greater the effort put into this internship, the greater and more valuable the experience will become.  This position will offer interns the opportunity to refine skills and talents necessary for future roles in high performance sport.

This is an unpaid position that will include credit hours as determined by the internship program guidelines of the appropriate college. USA Taekwondo cannot offer any financial compensation, housing, or meal allowances.

Qualifications

  • Students must be majors in sports management, sports administration, project management, business, or public policy/non-profit management.
  • Ability to place the USAT internship as the top priority.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and creative ability.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple projects, and consistent punctuality.
  • Adequate clerical skills to function efficiently in an office environment.  Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, and Outlook) is helpful.
  • Strong desire to learn and gain experience by working on a variety of projects in a professional work environment.
  • Available to work a minimum of 30 hours per week during regular business hours (8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday) during the semester (between May 26-August 21).

Primary Responsibilities & Projects
An intern may work on any or all of the following projects. The projects included below are representative, but not exhaustive, of the most important tasks. The staff and the intern will plan projects based on their timing and significance.

  • Assist the High Performance department with the planning and execution of up to five summer training camps, including; communication with camp attendees; communication with the Olympic Training Center staff; purchasing, allocating, and distributing any required apparel or gift items; supervision of the camp itself; assistance with travel; and chaperone duties during camps (if needed).
  • Assist the High Performance Division with the logistics of international team travel, including; flight and hotel arrangements; communication with athletes and coaches; inventory; and travel visas.
  • Assist the USAT Events Department with the U.S. National Championships in Austin, TX  in July 2014. Duties to be determined by the Director of Events for USA Taekwondo.
  • Develop, advertise, and implement educational webinars for USAT members.
  • Will be an ambassador of USA Taekwondo inside and outside the office.

Credit Hours

The USA Taekwondo event management internship will include credit hours as determined by the internship program guidelines of the appropriate college.
